Andrej Babiš criticizes Czech debt and government spending

Andrej Babiš has drawn criticism following recent statements regarding the Czech Republic's national debt and government spending. In a social media video, Babiš argued that citizens should not fear the national debt, noting that total savings in Czech banks, approximately 3.924 trillion CZK, exceed the current state debt of 3.726 trillion CZK. He suggested that, hypothetically, citizens could purchase the entire debt and still have 200 billion CZK remaining.

This claim was met with sharp pushback from political figures, including Daniel Krutý of the Generace movement, who pointed to rising interest payments and structural deficits.

Additionally, Babiš criticized the Fiala government for allocating 140.63 million CZK to fund conferences for the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) between 2025 and 2027. He questioned the necessity of such expenditures and expressed skepticism regarding the European focus on military industry over peace initiatives, advocating instead for a push toward ending the war in Ukraine.
