Speaker Tomio Okamura calls President Petr Pavel a liar and traitor
In an interview with Novinky.cz, Speaker of the Chamber Tomio Okamura (SPD) labelled President Petr Pavel a “křivák” (liar) and “podrazák” (traitor). Okamura criticised Pavel’s communication with the governing coalition (ANO, SPD, Motoristů) and recalled Pavel’s 2023 debate remark that Okamura would pose a moral danger to youth if appointed education minister. He added that he has never met the president and defended his own record, stating he has never committed a moral offence, stolen, or taken subsidies.
Okamura’s accusations were met with a sharp response from ODS leader Martin Kupka, who called Okamura’s statements “destructive” and said that he and his party would work to end Okamura’s term within three years. Kupka also disputed Okamura’s claims about a secret deal on L‑159 aircraft for Ukraine, Pavel’s veto on budget‑rule changes, and the president’s defence spending, arguing that the government’s defence budget had already been cut by 21 billion CZK.
The exchange highlights a growing political rift between the president and opposition leaders, focusing on issues of foreign policy, defence spending and the president’s role in the coalition government.
