Andrej Barna wins silver and sets national record in Paris

Serbian swimmer Andrej Barna won the silver medal in the 50m freestyle at the European Aquatics Championships in Paris. He achieved a time of 21.37 seconds, which set a new national record for Serbia.

Barna shared the silver medal with Russian swimmer Igor Kornev, who also clocked 21.37 seconds. The gold medal was won by Ukraine’s Nikita Sheremet with a time of 21.13 seconds. Two-time Olympic champion Kristof Milak finished fourth.

Barna’s achievement follows a significant personal journey, including a battle with kidney cancer in 2019 that required emergency surgery. To prepare for this championship, he reportedly sacrificed his job in the United States to focus entirely on training. For his performance, Barna is set to receive 15,000 euros in national sports recognition from the Republic of Serbia, in addition to 1,500 euros from the European Aquatics Federation.
