Sweden election: Left-wing bloc wins parliamentary majority
The 2026 Swedish parliamentary election has resulted in a narrow victory for the left-wing bloc, which secured 176 seats in the 349-seat Riksdag. This outcome narrowly defeated the right-wing government bloc, led by Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, which obtained 173 seats. Following the announcement of the final results, Kristersson submitted his resignation.
The Social Democrats, led by Magdalena Andersson, emerged as the largest single party with 99 seats. The nationalist Sweden Democrats saw a decline in support, securing 62 seats and falling to third place behind the Moderates, who won 70 seats.
While the left-wing bloc is poised to form a government, analysts suggest that forming a stable coalition may prove challenging due to the slim margin. The incoming administration is expected to focus on issues such as climate change, social welfare, and healthcare, though significant shifts in migration policy are considered unlikely.
In a separate but related democratic exercise, the 2026 school election saw the Tidö block receive 50.72 percent of the votes among middle and high school students, with the Moderates being the largest party in that specific vote.
