SNS leader Andrej Danko threatens parliamentary blockade over minister dispute
A political crisis is escalating within Slovakia's governing coalition as the Slovak National Party (SNS) demands the resignation of Environment Minister Tomáš Taraba. SNS leader Andrej Danko has issued an ultimatum for Taraba to step down by September 15, proposing State Secretary Filip Kuffa as his successor.
Danko has threatened to use the political lever of refusing to open the next National Council session if his demands are not met. The dispute is fueled by several controversies, including a contract for cleaning the Danube awarded to an Italian company, the reconstruction of turbines at the Gabčíkovo hydro-electric plant, and national park zoning issues. Regarding the Danube tender, Taraba defended the decision, noting the Italian firm provided a bid 70 million euros lower than expected.
Additionally, opposition leader Michal Šimečka has criticized a turbine repair contract, alleging it is overpriced by 100 million euros. The European Commission has also warned that disputes over national park zoning could jeopardize 450 million euros in Recovery Plan payments. While the tension is high, Danko stated that SNS does not intend to collapse the government.
