Andrew Flintoff resigns as England Lions coach to lead Sydney Thunder

Former England all‑rounder Andrew Flintoff has stepped down as head coach of the England Lions after nearly two years in the role. Flintoff, who took charge in September 2024, said he was proud of developing the country’s emerging talent and thanked ECB staff, including performance director Ed Barney and managing director Rob Key. He will focus on his new appointment as head coach of the Big Bash League franchise Sydney Thunder in Australia, a position he accepted in June 2024. The England and Wales Cricket Board confirmed that Mike Yardy will take over coaching duties for the Lions’ upcoming four‑day match against Pakistan at Beckenham on 12 August. ECB officials praised Flintoff for transforming the Lions environment and helping a new generation of players and coaches. Flintoff’s departure marks the end of his short‑term involvement with the England development side and signals a shift to the Australian T20 competition.
