Andrew Garfield discusses inclusive vision for Spider-Man

Actor Andrew Garfield has revisited his previous suggestions regarding the sexual orientation of Peter Parker. During the promotion of his film ‘Rebellion’, Garfield reiterated views he first expressed in 2013, arguing that Spider-Man is a universal character that should allow all viewers to see themselves in the hero, regardless of gender, race, or orientation.

Garfield noted that during the production of ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’, he engaged in discussions with producer Matt Tolmach about the possibility of Peter Parker exploring his sexuality. He had previously suggested that the character’s partner, Mary Jane Watson, could be played by a man, such as Michael B. Jordan, to explore a bisexual narrative.

While Garfield maintains this artistic perspective on inclusivity, there are currently no indications that Sony plans to implement such changes. Meanwhile, current Spider-Man actor Tom Holland has indicated that there is a plan in place for the future transition of the role, and he has expressed interest in seeing characters like Miles Morales introduced to the cinematic universe.
