Andrew Garfield expresses AI concerns following ‘Artificial’ premiere

Actor Andrew Garfield has expressed growing apprehension regarding artificial intelligence following his preparation for the film ‘Artificial’. Directed by Luca Guadagnino, the drama portrays the rise of OpenAI and the 2023 leadership crisis involving CEO Sam Altman, whom Garfield portrays.

During the film’s premiere at the New York Film Festival, Garfield stated that researching the technology for his role made him ‘a bit scared’ and led to a sense of mistrust. He noted that those encouraging widespread AI use often seem unaware of its true capacities, describing such promotion as ‘a little irresponsible’. While he previously used ChatGPT as a research tool, he has since ceased using the chatbot.

The film, written by Simon Rich, features a cast including Yura Borisov as Ilya Sutskever, Monica Barbaro as Mira Murati, and Mark Rylance as Geoffrey Hinton. ‘Artificial’ is scheduled for a limited US cinema release on Christmas Day, with an expanded release following in January 2027.
