Andrew Garfield Discusses 'Artificial' After Amazon Drops Film

Actor Andrew Garfield spoke publicly for the first time about Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming drama Artificial, in which he portrays OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman and dramatizes Altman’s sudden 2023 dismissal and reinstatement. Garfield made the comments while promoting his new movie The Magic Faraway Tree, saying he was both surprised and unsurprised by Amazon MGM Studios’ decision to abandon the project.

He praised Amazon for its support during production and described the studio as “nothing but supportive,” noting that the film later found a new home with independent distributor Neon. Garfield called Neon “a daring studio making daring films” and expressed optimism that the movie will reach audiences and seek awards consideration. The $40‑$50 million production, starring also Monica Barbaro, Yura Borisov, Mark Rylance and others, was originally linked to Amazon shortly after the tech giant announced a $50 billion investment in OpenAI. Neon has acquired the rights and intends to launch a campaign for Oscar eligibility.
