Andrew George addresses fisheries policy and ferry service risks

Liberal Democrat MP Andrew George has commented on the recent visit of Fisheries Minister Stephen Morgan to Newlyn. George noted that the Minister appeared sincerely interested in using science and evidence to support a sustainable fishing industry that balances marine conservation with protein harvesting.

While the Cornish Fish Producers Organisation is noted for leading science-based policymaking, George highlighted the need for increased investment, better protection for low-impact fishing methods in the 6-12 mile zone, and improved collaboration between scientists and the industry. He also cited ongoing challenges regarding export markets following Brexit.

Additionally, George raised concerns regarding the potential loss of lifeline ferry services for residents of St Agnes and St Martins due to market failure. He has appealed to Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander to intervene and maintain these services through the winter to prevent residents from being cut off from essential services, including schools and healthcare.
