Andrew Knizner opts out of Boston Red Sox contract

Veteran catcher Andrew Knizner has opted out of his contract with the Boston Red Sox, becoming a free agent. The 31-year-old had been playing for the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox since joining the organization on a minor league deal in late June.

Knizner's path to the major leagues in Boston was complicated by recent roster moves, including the Red Sox's trade deadline acquisition of catcher Adley Rutschman from the Baltimore Orioles. Rutschman is currently on a rehab assignment with Worcester following a wrist injury.

Knizner has demonstrated strong offensive performance in the minor leagues this season. During 21 games with Worcester, he posted a .316 average with two home runs and 16 RBIs. He also performed well earlier this year with Triple-A Albuquerque before being released by the Rockies.
