Andrew Lloyd Webber speaks at México Siglo XXI

British composer and producer Andrew Lloyd Webber appeared as a guest speaker at the annual México Siglo XXI event, organized by the Fundación Telmex Telcel. During a conversation moderated by journalist Alberto Lati, the musical theatre icon shared reflections on his creative philosophy, his upbringing, and the importance of vocation.

Webber emphasized that “the story is the most important thing,” noting that a strong narrative can sustain a show even if the music is secondary, whereas a weak plot can lead to failure. He joked that his musical 'Cats' serves as the exception to this rule. He also revealed that he has recently completed the first draft of a new musical scheduled to premiere in London in September of next year.

Reflecting on his early life, Webber described how his passion for music began at age six or seven while composing for a toy puppet theater. He discussed the transition from his classical music roots to musical theatre, recalling how early opportunities, such as writing 'Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat' for a school concert, helped launch his career. He encouraged young attendees to identify their passions and seize opportunities to turn those vocations into professional paths.
