Andrew McCarthy captures blood moon eclipse from Florida parking lot

Astrophotographer Andrew McCarthy captured a high-fidelity image of a near-total blood moon eclipse from a hotel parking lot in Florida. The celestial event, which occurred on August 27, 2026, saw Earth’s shadow covering 96% of the moon’s surface, causing it to take on a red-orange hue as Earth’s atmosphere filtered sunlight.

Despite the presence of streetlights at the Quality Inn location, McCarthy utilized rapid-succession photography to produce a clear view of the moon. The resulting image highlights the ability to capture significant astronomical events from humble, everyday locations.
