Romanian prosecutors add hate‑speech charges against Andrew Tate

Romanian anti‑organized crime prosecutors (DIICOT) have expanded the criminal investigation of influencer Andrew Tate, adding charges of inciting hatred and discrimination against women. The new allegation is based on a series of social‑media speeches Tate posted between 2021 and 2024, which prosecutors say encouraged public hostility toward women.

Tate, a 39‑year‑old British citizen with dual U.S. nationality, was summoned to DIICOT’s headquarters and formally notified that he is a suspect in this separate case. He and his brother Tristan have already been under investigation since December 2022 for forming an organised criminal group, human trafficking, sexual offences and money‑laundering. A Romanian court annulled the earlier indictment in December 2024, sending the case back to prosecutors for further work.

The expanded probe also covers four additional suspects and continues alongside the ongoing human‑trafficking investigation. Tate has publicly contested the charges, posting on X that he is being prosecuted for “jokes” made on his podcasts. His online content has drawn criticism from domestic‑violence groups in Ireland, who warn that misogynistic influencer material is influencing young boys and children.
