Bulgaria announces 300 million euro relief package for fuel price surge
The Bulgarian government has announced a comprehensive anti-crisis package exceeding 300 million euros to mitigate the impact of rising fuel prices. A central component of the plan is a one-time 50-euro 'inflation check' aimed at over 550,000 vulnerable citizens living below the poverty line. This assistance will be distributed automatically through the Social Assistance Agency.
To lower costs for motorists and industry, the government intends to remove the excise duty on propane-butane. Additionally, significant subsidies are being allocated to key sectors, including public transport, school and medical transport, and agriculture. Specifically, 170 million euros are earmarked for farmers, with 100 million euros dedicated to compensating for the rise in diesel prices compared to 2025.
The measures have faced criticism from opposition parties, including GERB and 'We Continue the Change', who argue the aid is insufficient, poorly targeted, or politically motivated ahead of presidential elections. Meanwhile, financial analysts warn that diesel prices could reach 2.50 euros per liter due to global supply deficits and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, noting that Brent crude has reached 148 dollars per barrel.
