Andrey Zvyagintsev designated as foreign agent by Russia
The Russian Ministry of Justice has added acclaimed filmmaker Andrey Zvyagintsev to its registry of foreign agents. The ministry alleges that Zvyagintsev participated in creating materials for foreign agents and undesirable organizations, disseminated false information regarding Russian authorities, and maintained contacts with foreign agents.
Zvyagintsev, a highly decorated director and screenwriter who has lived in exile in France since 2022, recently won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival for his film ‘Minotaur’. The film, which explores the fragmentation of Russian society against the backdrop of the invasion of Ukraine, was also selected by the French National Centre for Cinema and the Moving Image as France’s official Oscar candidate.
During his acceptance speech at Cannes, Zvyagintsev publicly appealed to President Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine. The foreign agent designation in Russia carries significant legal implications, including potential fines and prison sentences for repeat offenders, and often results in intense scrutiny and stigmatization by state media.
