Andrey Zvyagintsev designated ‘foreign agent’ by Russia

Russian authorities have designated acclaimed film director Andrey Zvyagintsev as a ‘foreign agent’. The decision was announced by the Kremlin on Friday, according to the state news agency TASS.

Russia's Ministry of Justice accused the 62-year-old filmmaker of disseminating false information regarding the decisions and policies of Russian public authorities. The Ministry also noted that Zvyagintsev resides outside of the Russian Federation and has interacted with foreign agents.

Zvyagintsev, who has lived abroad since the COVID-19 pandemic, recently won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival for his film ‘Minotaur’. The film depicts a Russian businessman forced to decide which employees to mobilize for the war in Ukraine. During his acceptance speech, Zvyagintsev called for the end of the carnage, stating that ‘millions of people on both sides of the front line dream of only one thing: for the massacres to stop.’

The ‘foreign agent’ label carries significant restrictions in Russia, including being barred from holding public office and being required to register all activities with the authorities.
