Andriï Doubnytsky among dozens of Ukrainian POWs executed by Russian forces, UN reports

Ukrainian soldier Andriï Doubnytsky, 25, sent a final message to his wife on 15 February 2024 before his unit was captured near Avdiïvka in eastern Donetsk. Two days later his wife identified his body among five corpses shown in a video posted by Russian media. The 110th Ukrainian brigade confirmed the deaths of Doubnytsky and fellow soldier Ivan Jytnyk and accused Russian troops of violating an evacuation agreement.

The Ukrainian prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation into the alleged execution of disarmed prisoners of war. A United Nations report released in June 2024 documented 129 verified cases of Ukrainian POW executions, noting a sharp increases since 2023. Ukrainian intelligence estimates more than 900 soldiers have been killed in over 340 incidents, suggesting the official figures represent only a fraction of the total. Officials say the pattern of killings was encouraged by the Wagner paramilitary group before its dismantling. Russian authorities have not commented and continue to reject accusations of war crimes.
