Andrij Sybiha sparks debate over Kyiv's historical role in Europe

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrij Sybiha has sparked debate following a social media post marking the 975th anniversary of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. Sybiha described Kyiv as the gateway through which Christian civilization reached the West a millennium ago, framing Ukraine's current path toward European Union membership as a return to its rightful place within the European family.

Sybiha's comments also addressed the conflict with Russia, asserting that Moscow attempts to claim the history and identity of its neighbors. The post, which included footage of officials including President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, sought to link Ukraine's religious heritage to its modern geopolitical aspirations.

The remarks have drawn criticism in Poland. Marcin Możdżonek, an advisor to Karol Nawrocki, characterized the statements as an attempt to distort history and suggested that the Polish state should respond to such narratives to prevent future negative consequences.
