Andrija Mandić asserts Montenegrin sovereignty in political speech
Montenegrin politician Andrija Mandić, leader of the New Serb Democracy (NSD), has signaled a shift in political rhetoric by asserting that decisions regarding the future of Montenegro will be made within the country itself. During a speech at Fundina, Mandić stated, “Decisions about the future of Montenegro will be made here, as they have always been made here,” emphasizing national sovereignty in decision-making processes.
Mandić described Montenegro as a nation that is both Serbian and home to various ethnic groups, including Montenegrins, Albanians, Bosniaks, Muslims, and Croats. Analysts suggest this stance reflects a move toward a more civic, multi-ethnic, and multi-religious vision aligned with European integration.
Political analyst Blagoje Grahovac noted that for Mandić to truly evolve, he must distance himself from more radical ideologies and external influences, specifically mentioning the need to move away from the influence of Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić. Grahovac also characterized Milan Knežević, leader of the DNP, as a political loser in the current landscape, suggesting that Mandić’s focus on domestic stability and sovereignty could redefine his political standing.
