Android 17 adoption remains low at 1 percent of active devices

Data from Google’s Android Studio indicates that the latest Android 17 operating system is running on only approximately 1 percent of active devices. This low adoption rate follows its release in mid-June, as manufacturers must adapt the software to their specific hardware and interfaces before distribution.

Android 16 currently holds the largest market share at 25.4 percent. Other significant versions include Android 14 at roughly 15 percent and Android 15 at 14.7 percent. Older versions also maintain a notable presence, with Android 13 at 11.8 percent and Android 11 at approximately 10 percent.

The fragmentation is attributed to the way updates are rolled out, as each manufacturer, such as Samsung or Motorola, must customize and test the software independently. Consequently, Google Pixel devices are typically the first to receive new versions, while other brands lag behind. In contrast, Apple’s iOS maintains a much higher adoption rate, with iOS 26 reportedly used by 79 percent of active iPhones as of June 2026.
