Android 17 introduces AISeal privacy feature with hardware limitations
Android 17 introduces AISeal, a new privacy architecture designed to protect user data during AI interactions. Utilizing protected Kernel-based Virtual Machine (pKVM) technology, AISeal creates a hardware-isolated environment that allows AI models like Gemini to process screen content, messages, and cross-app tasks without the data being accessible to the operating system or third-party applications.
However, the implementation of this feature creates a divide in privacy protections based on device hardware. Because running heavy AI models locally requires significant RAM and neural processing units (NPUs), the full benefits of on-device, hardware-isolated processing are primarily available on flagship devices.
Users with mid-range or budget-friendly smartphones may lack the necessary hardware specifications to run these processes locally. Consequently, these users must rely on cloud-based processing to access similar automation and AI features, meaning their data is offloaded to external servers rather than being contained entirely within the device.
