Android 17 introduces new network security and privacy features
Google is introducing several network security enhancements in Android 17 to protect user privacy and mitigate cyber threats. A central feature is the implementation of the Encrypted Client Hello (ECH) standard. When used alongside private DNS, ECH obscures the domain names of visited websites and apps, preventing network operators and interceptors from tracking user activity.
To combat specific security risks, Android 17 allows mobile operators to disable 2G connectivity by default. This measure is intended to prevent attacks that force devices to downgrade from LTE or 5G to less secure 2G networks via massive SMS flooding. Additionally, the update introduces Local Network Protection, which requires apps to obtain permission before scanning or connecting to other devices on a local network.
Further security measures include Certificate Transparency, requiring all certificates to be logged in a public registry to prevent undetected attacks. In the latest QPR2 Beta 4 release for Pixel devices, Google has also introduced Notification Intelligence, which utilizes artificial intelligence to provide notification summaries.
