Android and Windows users face security update challenges

Users of Android and Windows systems face different challenges regarding long-term security maintenance.

For Android users, identifying when security support has ended can be difficult because devices do not provide explicit warnings when patches cease. Users can check their status by reviewing the security patch date in the device settings. If the last patch is several months old, the device may be nearing or has already passed its end-of-support lifecycle. It is also important to monitor Google Play system updates, which handle critical components separately from the main operating system.

Regarding Windows, Microsoft has announced that certain digital certificates used by Windows Update will expire in May and June 2027. This change affects Windows 10, Windows 11, and various Windows Server versions. Devices that do not have the new certificates may lose the ability to connect to update servers, preventing the download of essential security fixes. While Microsoft began distributing replacement certificates via cumulative updates starting in September 2025, systems that have fallen behind or are running unsupported versions may face connectivity issues.
