Android enables secure password and passkey migration
Google has introduced a new feature for Android that allows users to securely transfer passwords and passkeys directly between compatible password managers. This new process eliminates the need for users to export credentials into unencrypted text or CSV files, which previously left sensitive data vulnerable on the device.
The transfer is coordinated by the Android operating system. To use the feature, a user opens their new password manager and selects the option to import or copy data. Android then detects the password managers installed on the device, allowing the user to select the source, review the data, and authorize the transfer. The process is designed to complete in a few seconds.
In addition to traditional passwords, the update specifically enables the migration of passkeys, which previously had to be recreated manually for each service. Currently, the feature is supported by Google Password Manager, 1Password, Bitwarden, and Dashlane. Google has stated that more partners will be added in the future. The functionality is compatible with devices running Android 8 or later.
