Android reaches 54.1% smartphone OS share in Japan

A survey conducted by MMD Laboratory for August 2026 reveals a shift in the smartphone operating system market share in Japan. Android has reached a 54.1% share, while iPhone (iOS) has declined to 45.6%. This represents a notable change over the last six months, with Android increasing by 3.3 percentage points and iPhone decreasing by 3.4 percentage points.

Among Android users, the AQUOS series remains the most popular device at 25.9%, followed by Google Pixel at 17.6%, Galaxy at 14.1%, and Xperia at 13.3%. For iPhone users, the iPhone 16 is the most widely used model at 21.8%, followed by the iPhone 17 at 17.3%.

The data suggests that rising prices for new iPhone models may be influencing consumer behavior, as the decline in iPhone share is more pronounced compared to previous years where the market remained closer to a 50/50 split.
