Android smartphones perform background optimizations during overnight charging

Modern Android smartphones utilize overnight charging periods to perform various system optimizations and background tasks. To prevent battery degradation caused by maintaining a 100% charge under high voltage and temperature, modern devices use smart charging systems. These systems estimate wake-up times and employ trickle charging, often pausing at 80% to ensure the battery reaches full capacity just before the user wakes.

During these idle periods, the Android JobScheduler triggers several intensive processes. One key task involves Gboard, Google’s keyboard app, which performs local AI training. Using a method called federated learning, the device trains AI models based on local typing data and sends only encrypted mathematical weight gradients back to Google servers, ensuring raw text content is not transmitted.

Additionally, the system performs hardware maintenance by cleaning flash memory, deleting junk files, and optimizing application databases to prevent lag. The device also conducts media indexing, using AI to recognize faces, pets, and objects in photo libraries, and employs OCR to scan text for improved internal search capabilities.
