Android software updates and smartphone display features

Android devices can receive significant functional updates and system changes without requiring a full firmware or OS version update. Through the Google Mainline project, Google has modularized various components of the operating system, allowing services like Google Play Services, Google Play Store, and Android AICore to be updated independently.

These modular updates can modify system behaviors, add new APIs for applications, and change how the device handles payments, connectivity, and artificial intelligence. Consequently, a device may display an older version of Android in its settings while actually possessing updated software configurations.

Additionally, Android devices feature a screen saver mode that can transform a smartphone into a smart display while charging. This function allows users to view photos, weather information, or smart home controls. The implementation varies by manufacturer; for instance, Google Pixel devices offer higher customization, while Samsung Galaxy devices focus more on photo displays. The feature can be configured to activate only when the device is charging and positioned vertically.
