Android users confront new after‑call ad scam as Google revamps backup rules

A new type of fraud called “AfterCall Ads” is spreading among Android phones. Malicious apps disguised as alarm clocks, calendars or note‑taking tools request the “draw over other apps” permission, then display full‑screen ads immediately after a call ends. The ads cannot be easily turned off, and victims often mistake them for system notifications.

Google has announced a overhaul of Android backup settings. Users will receive an email giving them a 45‑day window before the changes take effect. All backed‑up data – including SMS, call logs, device settings and the contents of the Download folder – will count against the user’s Google Drive storage quota. New controls let users pick which apps and data types are backed up, and automatic backup will pause if the quota is exceeded.

Both issues affect Android device users, with the scam reports originating from the Czech Republic and the backup policy change applying globally to Google accounts.
