Andrés Avelino Abreu Vargas, automotive pioneer, dies

Andrés Avelino Abreu Vargas, a prominent figure in the Dominican Republic's automotive and business sectors, passed away on Thursday, September 17, 2026. He was the founder of Avelino Abreu SAS, a company he established in 1968 starting with the commercialization of MAN trucks.

Under his leadership, the organization expanded to represent 19 international brands, including Audi, Volkswagen, Bentley, SEAT, Subaru, Hino, Hyster, Kumho, and Motul. The company's portfolio covers passenger and commercial vehicles, buses, tires, lubricants, and equipment for the agro-industrial and construction sectors.

Beyond his own company, Abreu Vargas was a key leader in the national business community. He served as the president of the Association of Vehicle Manufacturer Dealers (ACOFAVE) and was a member of the Board of Directors of Banco Popular Dominicano for over three decades.

Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, September 19, at the Avelino Abreu SAS headquarters in Santo Domingo, followed by interment at the Puerta del Cielo cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to the Fundación Proyecto Hombre.
