Rafael Márquez assembles coaching staff for Mexico National Team

Rafael Márquez is assembling his technical staff for his upcoming debut as head coach of the Mexican National Team. Following the departure of Javier Aguirre after the 2026 World Cup, the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) has tasked Márquez with leading the team toward the 2030 World Cup cycle.

Key appointments include former captain Andrés Guardado, who has reached a verbal agreement to serve as an assistant coach. The staff is expected to include Xabier Mancisidor, a goalkeeper coach with experience at Manchester City, and potentially Vidal Paloma as an assistant. Negotiations are also reportedly underway with goalkeeper Alfredo Talavera, who is seeking a four-year contract. Other names mentioned for specialized roles include Pol Llorente as a physical trainer and Xabier Mancisidor for goalkeeping.

Márquez is scheduled to make his official debut on September 26, 2026, in a friendly match against Colombia. However, FMF President Ivar Sisniega noted a logistical challenge: because the debut coincides with Liga MX Matchday 10, Márquez will be limited to calling up a maximum of two players per club. Additionally, Amazon Prime Video has secured broadcasting rights for several of the team's upcoming matches, including the debut against Colombia.
