Authorities have concluded the investigation into the fatal explosion that occurred on May 22 at the MOL Petrolkémia Zrt. Olefin-1 plant in Tiszaújváros. The incident, which took place during the restart of the facility following maintenance, resulted in one death and eleven injuries, including four serious and seven minor injuries.

The investigation revealed significant safety deficiencies. The occupational safety authority determined that the affected parts of the plant lacked the necessary equipment to detect and signal dangerous technological conditions in a timely manner or to safely interrupt processes when needed. The explosion was triggered while staff were inspecting icing on a pipeline.

As a result, the occupational safety authority has imposed a 38 million forint fine on the employer. Additionally, the company is mandated to review its technological and safety systems, improve worker training, conduct thorough investigations of all workplace accidents, and implement a scheduled maintenance program for specific pipelines and fittings.
