López Obrador presents new book ‘Pueblo’ and defends political legacy

Former Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has made a public reappearance from his estate in Palenque, Chiapas, to present his second book, titled ‘Pueblo’. The work, which was originally intended to be named ‘Gloria’, aims to complete his ‘Mexican Humanism’ theory by documenting Mexico's political history from Independence to the current administration. The book complements his previous work, ‘Grandeza’.

During his announcement, López Obrador defended his legacy, claiming that corruption in Mexico has ended, though he acknowledged its persistence among the upper classes. He also used the platform to criticize the media and specific journalists, including Carmen Aristegui, Ciro Gómez Leyva, and Carlos Loret de Mola, accusing them of acting as ‘neofascists’ and spokespeople for the right to protect oligarchic interests. He further criticized U.S. ambassadors, describing them as ‘meddlesome’ in Mexican affairs.

President Claudia Sheinbaum responded to the announcement, describing the message as ‘very emotive’ and noting the dedication López Obrador made to her, calling her the best president in the world. Sheinbaum clarified that while he has withdrawn from daily political action and public life, his literary work remains a distinct form of political reflection.
