István Kapitány denies resignation amid energy official's departure

Hungarian Minister of Economic and Energy Affairs, István Kapitány, has categorically denied reports suggesting he was considering resignation. The denial follows a report by HVG and a subsequent public rebuke from Prime Minister Péter Magyar, who criticized the outlet for publishing what he termed "Megafon-level lies."

The controversy was triggered by the sudden resignation of András Tótth, the Ministry's energy state secretary, effective October 13, 2026. Tótth cited personal reasons for his departure. The timing of his exit drew scrutiny following a public dispute involving Zsolt Tárkányi, a state secretary who criticized a planned battery industry conference in Debrecen, expressing concerns over local environmental impacts and lack of communication with city representatives.

In addition to the ministerial shifts, István Láng has also announced his resignation as the head of the National Water Directorate (OVF), effective October 15, 2026. József Gacsályi will serve as the acting director until a new leader is appointed.
