Andrzej Gut, first mayor of Poronin, passes away at 74

Andrzej Gut, known as ‘Mostowy’, the first mayor of the independent Poronin municipality, has passed away at the age of 74. Born in Biały Dunajec, Gut was a key figure in the establishment of Poronin as an independent administrative unit in 1995.

During his tenure from 1995 to 2002, Gut was instrumental in building the municipality's foundational structures, including the Civil Registry Office, social assistance centers, and educational administration. His leadership focused heavily on infrastructure, specifically in water supply, environmental protection, and sewage systems, utilizing funding from the National Fund for Environmental Protection and the World Bank.

Gut, a graduate of the Cracow University of Technology, was recognized as an Honorary Citizen of Poronin in 2025 during the municipality's 30th-anniversary celebrations. In response to his death, the current mayor, Anita Żegleń, has declared three days of mourning in the municipality from August 19 to August 21, 2026. During this period, flags will be flown at half-mast, and all scheduled entertainment, cultural, and sporting events have been canceled.
