Andrzej Wajda centenary celebrated with New York retrospective and Polish concert
To commemorate the centenary of the birth of renowned Polish director Andrzej Wajda, several cultural events are being held in the United States and Poland.
In New York, Film Forum on Manhattan is hosting ‘Andrzej Wajda 100,’ a three-week retrospective running until October 22. The program includes 25 films across 77 screenings, many of which are presented in newly digitally restored 4K versions. The retrospective features works that shaped the Polish School of filmmaking, such as ‘Kanał’ and ‘Ashes and Diamonds,’ as well as later films like ‘Katyń’ and ‘Man of Iron.’ The Polish Institute of Culture in New York has called it the most comprehensive overview of the Oscar laureate’s work ever presented in the United States. Martin Scorsese is contributing introductions to the program.
In Poland, the Łódź Philharmonic is organizing a symphonic concert dedicated to the music from Wajda’s films. The concert celebrates both the director's 100th birthday and the tenth anniversary of his death, featuring compositions by collaborators such as Wojciech Kilar and Andrzej Korzyński.
