Anduril to build submarine component facility at Sparrows Point
Anduril Industries will build a new two-million-square-foot manufacturing facility, named Arsenal-2, at the Sparrows Point site in Baltimore County, Maryland. The project involves a $3.7 billion investment from Anduril and a Navy contract worth up to $2.9 billion, totaling a $6.6 billion investment aimed at boosting American maritime production.
The facility is designed to produce large assemblies and components for Virginia-class nuclear-powered attack submarines, including torpedo tubes and spherical air flasks. These components will be supplied to General Dynamics Electric Boat and Huntington Ingalls Industries’ Newport News Shipbuilding for final assembly. The move comes as the Navy seeks to meet its goal of producing two submarines per year.
To facilitate this, US Wind has relinquished its lease at the Tradepoint Atlantic site in Sparrows Point, ending its previous plans to fabricate offshore wind turbine towers. US Wind cited legal disputes and federal agency uncertainty as reasons for shifting focus. The Anduril facility, which will include a 1,200-foot graving dock, is expected to begin initial operations in 2030.
