Anduril unveils Steelfin interceptor missile family
Defense technology company Anduril has unveiled Steelfin, a family of configurable and scalable ground-to-air interceptor missiles. The system is designed to counter a wide spectrum of aerial threats, including drones, cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, and hypersonic weapons.
Steelfin utilizes a two-stage architecture consisting of a first-stage booster for range and performance, and a second-stage terminal interceptor with shared airframe, avionics, and flight controls across all variants. This modular design allows different interceptors to move through the same production line, facilitating rapid scaling. Anduril plans to produce ‘about several thousand’ Steelfin variants annually in the near term.
The announcement comes as the United States and its allies seek to expand weapons production to meet rising demand for air and missile defense systems. The modularity of Steelfin aims to reduce interception costs and address the challenge of using expensive interceptors against low-cost threats like drones.
