Andy Barr introduces Lawful Hemp Protection Act for Kentucky farmers

U.S. Representative Andy Barr (R‑KY) has introduced the bipartisan Lawful Hemp Protection Act, the first comprehensive federal framework to regulate hemp‑derived consumer products. The bill establishes consistent standards for cultivation, manufacturing, testing, and labeling, while prohibiting synthetic cannabinoids in finished products. It limits retail sales to adults 21 and older and bans marketing aimed at children, aiming to boost consumer and child safety.

The legislation seeks to protect Kentucky’s hemp growers by requiring that hemp be grown, processed, and packaged in the United States, and it preserves the ability of states to enact stricter regulations. Supporters include the American Healthy Alternatives Association, Hemp Industry & Farmers of America, and the Kentucky Hemp Association, among others.
