Andy Burnham announces new technical education pathways for English schools

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has announced plans to establish technical and vocational education routes in English schools that hold equal standing with traditional academic pathways. The proposal aims to introduce these technical routes at age 14, drawing inspiration from the University Technical College (UTC) model. Proponents, including Lord Kenneth Baker of the Baker Dearing Educational Trust, note that UTCs have demonstrated strong employment outcomes, with youth unemployment rates below 5% compared to 16.4% in traditional state secondary schools.

Industry representatives, such as insulation specialist Actis, have welcomed the vision, suggesting it could help address the skills gap in sectors like construction. However, the initiative faces criticism from education unions like the NASUWT, which cited concerns regarding school funding and the potential for vocational pathways to disproportionately channel lower-income students away from academic routes. An employer-led healthcare and engineering pathway will be implemented at Walney School in Barrow-in-Furness this September as an example of the model.
