Andy Burnham attends first Everton match as Prime Minister

Prime Minister Andy Burnham attended his first Everton match since taking office, watching the Premier League game against Crystal Palace at Hill Dickinson Stadium in Liverpool. He was accompanied by his wife, Marie-France van Heel, and former footballer Peter Reid.

In recent discussions with regional mayors, Mr Burnham expressed a general ambition for the United Kingdom to host future major sporting tournaments, including a potential bid for the men’s World Cup. While hosts for the tournament are currently allocated through 2034, the Prime Minister has previously criticized the fact that the UK has only hosted the men’s World Cup once, in 1966.

A government spokesperson stated that the UK remains committed to delivering major sporting events to drive regional growth and job creation. The country is already set to host the Tour de France and Tour de France Femmes Grands Departs in 2027, as well as UEFA Euro 2028, and will host the women’s World Cup in 2035.
