Andy Burnham cancels engagements following death of his father

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has cancelled official engagements for Monday and Tuesday following the death of his father, Roy Burnham, at age 86. Roy had been living with Alzheimer’s disease in a care facility.

Burnham had previously spoken publicly about the personal impact of his father’s illness, noting the sadness that Roy was unaware his son had become Prime Minister. The Prime Minister has cited this experience as a primary motivation for his political commitment to overhauling the United Kingdom’s social care system, which he has described as “broken.”

Downing Street confirmed the cancellation of scheduled meetings, including a session with business leaders. Burnham has since expressed gratitude on social media for the condolences received from the public and leaders of other political parties.
