Andy Burnham claims Russian interference in Brexit referendum
Prime Minister Andy Burnham has sparked debate regarding foreign interference in the 2016 Brexit referendum. During an appearance on ‘The Rest is Politics’ podcast, Burnham stated that upon entering Downing Street, he was given a clear answer that Russian interference had occurred during the vote.
Burnham suggested that the UK has been on the back foot and has not sufficiently informed the public about the reality of foreign interference in British democracy. He further noted to MPs that while Russian actors sought to interfere in the 2019 general election, it is inconceivable that this was the first instance of such activity.
In response to these claims, MI5 chief Ken McCallum stated that while Russia did attempt to interfere with the Brexit referendum, politicians should not overstate the success of those attempts. Downing Street has maintained that the referendum outcome remains valid. Despite the controversy, Burnham has stated he respects the referendum result and intends to abide by Labour’s manifesto regarding the EU single market, customs union, and freedom of movement.
