UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham confirms Russian interference in Brexit vote

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has publicly acknowledged that Russia interfered in the 2016 Brexit referendum. Speaking on the podcast ‘The Rest Is Politics’, Burnham stated that after assuming office in the summer, he requested a briefing on potential Moscow involvement and received a “clear answer” that interference had occurred.

Burnham warned that voters in Germany and France must remain vigilant against similar foreign attempts to influence domestic politics. He noted that during a recent meeting in Berlin, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz discussed potential links between Russia and the far-right AfD party.

In a separate security matter, Burnham addressed Parliament regarding a suspected plot targeting the RAF Fairford airbase. He stated the incident was “almost certainly” directed by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). In response, the UK government has imposed sanctions on two Iranian nationals, Ruhollah Bazghandi and Shahram Ali Reza Tamarzadeh Jakki, for their alleged role in facilitating hostile activities.

Additionally, Burnham advocated for closer economic ties with the European Union, suggesting that a new pact could add over £10 billion annually to the British economy by 2040. He indicated that rejoining the EU could potentially be included in the Labour Party’s future election programs.
