Andy Burnham discusses father's Alzheimer's and social care

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has shared a personal account regarding his father, Roy, who suffers from advanced Alzheimer's disease and lives in a care facility in Northern England. During an appearance on the "How to Fail" podcast, Burnham revealed that his father is unaware of his son's role as Prime Minister.

Burnham recounted a poignant moment following his assumption of office on July 20, 2026, when care home staff arranged for his father to watch his televised entrance to Downing Street. According to Burnham, staff believed that "for a moment he knew" what he was seeing as he turned to look at the screen.

Reflecting on his family's experience, the Prime Minister has used his personal connection to the social care system to advocate for reform. He stated, "The system is broken. We cannot leave social care in this state," emphasizing that the NHS cannot recover unless the social care sector is addressed through difficult decisions and systemic changes.
