Andy Burnham faces scrutiny over Manchester City ties and taxpayer loans

Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham is facing criticism regarding his relationship with Manchester City football club and its ownership. Records indicate that Burnham attended two hospitality dinners with the club’s chairman, Khaldoon Al Mubarak, at the Etihad Stadium in 2017 and 2018. While the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) recently released a statement regarding Burnham’s meetings with the club, the disclosure did not explicitly detail these specific hospitality events.

Further scrutiny has been directed at £55.7 million in taxpayer-funded loans approved during Burnham’s tenure as mayor. These loans were granted to three property companies—New Little Mill, Vesta Street, and Lampwick Developments Limited—to support residential developments in the Ancoats area of Manchester. These companies have been identified as being linked to Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the owner of Manchester City, through Jersey-based structures.

Opposition politicians have raised concerns regarding the transparency of Burnham’s disclosures. While Burnham has pledged to publish information regarding his interactions with the club’s ownership, critics argue that previous statements regarding his meetings and hospitality dealings were incomplete.
