Andy Burnham Secures Labour Leadership Nomination, Nears UK Prime Ministership

Andy Burnham Labour leadership UK prime minister nominations 322 MPs

Nominations to replace Keir Starmer as Labour leader opened on Thursday, and 322 of the party's 402 MPs backed Andy Burnham. With the threshold of 323 nominations just one short, no other candidate can mathematically qualify, making Burnham the sole contender.

Without opposition, Burnham is expected to be declared Labour leader at a special conference and to assume the UK prime minister’s office on 20 July. He thanked the MPs, saying their support shows a shared belief that Britain needs a new political approach.

Burnham also addressed Labour’s earlier stance on the Gaza conflict, apologising that the party “got it wrong” and pledging tougher sanctions on those involved in the violence, while urging a stronger push for a cease‑fire.
