UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham considers EU re-entry options
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has signaled a major shift in the UK's approach to the European Union, stating that Brexit has caused “more harm than good.” During the Labour Party's annual conference and subsequent interviews, Burnham indicated that the government is prepared to consider all options for the future UK-EU relationship to end years of economic uncertainty.
Burnham outlined several potential paths, including maintaining the current status quo, joining a customs union, returning to the single market, or pursuing full re-entry into the EU. These options are expected to be presented at a bilateral summit scheduled for November. The Prime Minister emphasized the need for a long-term decision to stabilize the economy and address issues like migration and productivity.
Economic data from the Office for Budget Responsibility supports the Prime Minister's stance, estimating that the UK's long-term GDP will be 4% lower than it would have been had the country remained in the EU, with imports and exports also estimated to be 15% lower.
European leaders have responded to the announcement. French President Emmanuel Macron and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez both stated that the UK would be “welcome back” to the bloc, with Macron describing the potential move as a “wise decision.”
