Andy Carroll reveals he was sexually assaulted in 2021
Former England striker Andy Carroll has revealed that he was the victim of a sexual assault in 2021, according to his new autobiography, ‘Owning It’. The 37-year-old former Newcastle United and Liverpool player disclosed the traumatic incident, which occurred at his home while he was playing for Newcastle.
Carroll stated that an unnamed male acquaintance of his then-partner had come to his house to watch a boxing match. After Carroll went to sleep, the individual attempted to sexually assault him. Carroll recounted that he confronted the man, eventually knocking him unconscious when the attacker tried to re-enter the house, before contacting the police.
The perpetrator was subsequently found guilty of sexual offences and sentenced to three years in prison. Carroll described the ensuing legal process as ‘humiliating, embarrassing and absolutely horrendous’. He noted that the trauma has impacted all aspects of his life, including his ability to focus on football. He decided to include the account in his book at the last minute, hoping his testimony might help other survivors.
