Díaz achieved the mark on his second attempt during the final. The podium featured other athletes of Cuban origin: Pedro Pablo Pichardo took the silver with a jump of 17.76 meters, while Andrea Dallavalle secured the bronze with 17.37 meters.

Originally from Cuba, Díaz gained Italian citizenship and began competing for Italy after leaving his home country in 2021. This outdoor European title follows his previous successes in indoor world championships in Nanjing and Toruń.
